CCA Fish and Marine Welfare Conference 2021

Monday 18th January 2021 10.30am – 5.00pm GMT, online

Fish are forgotten creatures of animal welfare. This has begun to change in recent years. This conference examines the current situation.

The 2021 Catholic Concern for Animals (CCA) Fish and Marine Welfare Conference is the centerpiece of the CCA Fish Project 2020/21.The Project has been financially supported by Eurogroup for Animals and is designed to examine the “current state of play” with regard to fish and marine welfare with a faith based emphasis and, in particular, the tradition and practice of the Catholic Church.

The Conference is designed to bring together experts and interested organisations and individuals in Fish and Marine Welfare to discuss the latest situation concerning the welfare of fish and other marine creatures.

Fish and Marine Welfare has historically been neglected by faith communities, animal advocacy organizations and the wider community but this has begun to change since 2015, following the publication of two key documents. These two documents were Pope Francis ’Encyclical on the Environment, Laudato Si’ which was published in June 2015 and which was followed a year later in June 2016 by Jonathan Balcombe’s book, “What a Fish Knows”.

The CCA Fish and Marine Welfare Conference 2021 is the first major event to bring all the key actors together to discuss the impact of these two crucial publications in improving Fish Welfare and the improvement in the Marine Environment Welfare over the last 5 years.

Speakers include:

  • Welcome –  Bishop John Arnold, Environment Spokesperson, Bishops Conference of England and Wales
  • Message from the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development (confirmed)
  • Fish Welfare – A European Perspective – Doug Waley, Eurogroup for Animals
  • A Christian Ethical Assessment of UK Fish Farming – Prof. David Clough, University of Chester
  • Fish the Forgotten Species – Dr Gerald Taylor, Catholic Concern for Animals
